How to Get Started Series: Fly Fishing

Posted by Ramsey Outdoor on Jul 12th 2018

Fly fishing is both exhilarating and challenging, pushing your limits and sometimes rewarding you in the biggest ways. Best described by Herbert Hoover, a fly fisherman himself, “To go fishing is the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of sun on blue water. It brings meekness and inspiration from the decency of nature, charity toward tackle-makers, patience toward fish, a mockery of profits and egos, a quieting of hate, a rejoicing that you do not have to decide a darned thing until next week. And it is discipline in the equality of men - for all men are equal before fish.” But don’t feel intimidated by all the gear you think you might need, we’ve put together a basic guide to help get you started!

Gear Essentials

No matter your skill level, the right gear is essential to catching that trophy fish!

  1. Fly Rod: To get started, you will definitely need a rod! There are many different choices and sizes out there that range in price significantly. A good rod for beginners is a rod that is 9’ in length with a 4 or 5 weight fly line. Starting out with a 4 or 5 weight, 9’ fly rod allows you to fish for anything from small panfish to trout.
  2. Fly Reel: Just like rods, reels range in pricing. The basics you’ll need in a reel will be matching it to the weight of the rod you selected. This allows enough space for the backing and fly line itself.
  3. Fly Line and Backing: The weight of the line corresponds with the weight of your rod and reel. If you have purchased a 5-weight fly rod, then you will need a 5-weight fly line. When the line runs out, the backing kicks in. Usually, fly lines are about 80-90 feet in length. The backing gives you an additional 200+ yards typically when that big fish is pulling.
  4. Leader and Tippet: The leader and tippet connect the end of your fly line to your fly. You can buy pre-made leaders that include the tippet.
  5. Flies: You can’t catch fish without any flies! A good assortment of flies is essential to get you started.
  6. Nippers: They may just look like nail clippers, but you’ll be glad you have them when you need them! Nippers are used for snipping line and tippets when needed.
  7. Clothing: Always make sure you have the proper clothing so you blend in with your surroundings including a vest. Your vest will be key, as it holds your flies, nippers, sunglasses, and more! Make sure it is both comfortable and offers all the options you need.
  8. Waders: If you’re going to be standing in the water, you will want and need a pair of waders. They’ll keep you dry, warm, and happily fishing for hours!
  9. Wading Boots: Invest in a good pair of wading boots and your feet will thank you!
